InsideOUT and RainbowYOUTH urge all parties in Parliament to vote down the ‘Definition of Woman and Man’ bill at first reading.
Legislation that seeks to narrowly define who counts as a “man” or a “woman” does not change the reality that transgender people exist in every community across Aotearoa. What it does risk is increasing stigma, division, and harm; particularly for young people already facing disproportionate mental health challenges.
Our focus remains on building communities where every young person can belong, participate safely, and thrive.
To our transgender, takatāpui, and MVPFAFF+ whānau: you are strong, you are resilient, and your existence is undeniable; it is not to be defined by others. You are the ultimate authority on who you are. Trans people have always existed, and no bill can erase that reality.
“InsideOUT will continue standing alongside rainbow and takatāpui rangatahi and their whānau across the motu, while continuing to work with our partners in government and the community toward our shared responsibility to improve mental health, wellbeing, safety, and belonging for all New Zealanders” – Judy O’Brien, Chief Executive.
“RainbowYOUTH has always been a kaupapa grounded in the lived experiences of our rangatahi. Legislation that diminishes the validity of these experiences has no place in Aotearoa. RY remains committed to delivering better outcomes for takatāpui, MVPFAFF+, and transgender rangatahi. We strongly encourage the Government to prioritise legislation that does the same” – Petazae Thoms, Kaiwhakahaere Matua | Director.
These moments not only require us to loudly oppose discriminatory actions, but even more loudly express our support for the trans people. Let’s leave no room for doubt that trans people are welcome as they are, and there is no need for this bill. Not now. Not ever.
