Youth Volunteers

We are always looking for young people (under 27) to join our volunteer team and get involved! You can learn more about our volunteer values here.

Our volunteers take on tasks of facilitating workshops, hosting our radio show, filming and editing, graphic design and supporting events and campaigns.

About Our Board

Our Board of Trustees hails from across Aotearoa and operates within a ‘for youth, by youth’ framework. It is comprised of Youth Trustees (under the age of 27) supported by Executive Advisors (over the age of 27).

The general role of a board member is to support the following processes:

  • Set and maintain vision, mission and values, and develop strategy
  • Establish and monitor relevant policies and procedures
  • Ensure moral and legal compliance and accountability with relevant organisations
  • Maintain proper fiscal oversight
  • Select, manage, and support staff in their roles, and evaluate performance
  • Maintain effective board performance through member conduct and utilising development opportunities
  • Promote InsideOUT Kōaro as ambassadors and work to protect the reputation of the charity
  • Be familiar with the strengths and challenges that sexuality, sex and gender minority youth in Aotearoa face
  • Support InsideOUT to uphold our commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Represent the organisation in an official capacity as required
  • No experience required, however knowledge of InsideOUT and the structure of governance boards would be an advantage
  • Contribute to the vision, mission, and values of InsideOUT
  • Regular meeting attendance (Hours per month – 6 -15)

The ongoing commitments are:

  • Attending a 2-3 hour board meeting at a set time monthly (usually 6pm on the last Tuesday of each month)
  • Attending occasional additional meetings throughout the year eg. strategic planning days, trainings
  • Allowance for meeting one on one or in sub-committees with board members or staff as needed
  • Approximately up to one hours worth of responding to board business via e-mail weekly

Youth Trustee
(Under 27)

InsideOUT Kōaro is currently seeking two new Youth Trustees to serve on our Board of Trustees. We strongly encourage tauiwi of colour and tangata whenua to apply for these role as we are committed to ensuring diverse representation in our governance.

InsideOUT Kōaro operates within a ‘for youth, by youth’ framework, and as such is composed of Youth Trustees filling the majority of the Board positions, with four Executive Advisors. Our Chairperson, Secretaries, and Treasurer are all youth members.

As a member of our Board, you will govern and act as a steward for InsideOUT Kōaro. This will include taking care of big-picture planning, overseeing our vision, setting our strategy, making governance-based decisions, receiving reports on projects, contributing to financial planning, making decisions around employment, and more.

These are voluntary roles with the ability to have relevant expenses reimbursed such as travel expenses. These roles require approximately 10-15 hours per month, split between monthly 2-3 hour meetings, and picking up action points and responding to emails in between meetings. Board meetings take place both in-person at our Wellington office and over Zoom.

Applicants must be under the age of 27 and can be based anywhere in Aotearoa.

    • Work as part of the team to honour our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
    • Represent the organisation in an official capacity as required.
    • Contribute to the vision, mission, and values of InsideOUT.
    • Attend regular meetings.

No prior experience is required, however knowledge of InsideOUT Kōaro and the structure of governance boards is an advantage.

Executive Advisor
(Over 27)

InsideOUT Kōaro is currently seeking two Executive Advisors to serve on our Board of Trustees. At least one of these Executive Advisor positions will be held exclusively for Māori, as part of our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ensuring tangata whenua are represented in our governance.

As a member of our Board, you will govern and act as a steward for InsideOUT Kōaro – taking care of big-picture planning.

As an Executive Advisor, you will also support our Youth Trustees, utilising your skills and experience to build the capacity of the Board and support Youth Trustees in becoming effective leaders.

At this time, we are particularly interested in applicants with some skills and experience in any of the following:

  • financial management
  • legal expertise
  • human resources
  • not-for-profit / NGO management
  • fundraising

This is a voluntary role with the ability to have relevant expenses reimbursed such as travel expenses.     • Act as tuākana to the Youth Trustees and provide the skill sets and experience that someone age 27 or under may not have yet.
    • Have an understanding of the experiences of rainbow young people in Aotearoa.
    • Often have previous experience governing organisations, and may (though are not required to) bring skills like human resources, legal training, financial experience, and other governance experience to the Board table.
    • Foster the youth-focused kaupapa of InsideOUT Kōaro by prioritising youth voices and decision-making.
