Seeking Chief Executive

Make a Real Difference for Rainbow Rangatahi Across Aotearoa

We’re looking for a courageous, values-driven leader to guide InsideOUT Kōaro into its next chapter. If you’re passionate about empowering rangatahi and committed to building safer, more inclusive spaces for takatāpui and rainbow youth, this is your chance to lead meaningful change across Aotearoa.

About us

InsideOUT Kōaro is a national charity dedicated to ensuring rainbow and takatāpui young people feel safe, valued, and connected in their schools and communities. We deliver education, advocacy, and support nationwide, creating positive change where it matters most.

The Opportunity

As Chief Executive, you’ll provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for our organisation, managing a multi-million dollar budget while leading a passionate team of 5-7 direct reports. This is more than a management role – you’ll be our public voice, grow our impact, uphold our kaupapa, and be the driving force behind our mission.

What you’ll bring

  • Proven leadership and financial acumen, ideally in NGOs or education, with success in strategy, people, and budget management.
  • Strong understanding of te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, applied meaningfully across strategy, relationships, and daily mahi.
  • Deep commitment to rainbow equity, with lived or well-informed insight into LGBTQIA+ identities and intersectional challenges facing youth.
  • Emotionally intelligent and courageous communicator, able to build trust and adapt across diverse audiences, from rangatahi to government.
  • Strategic thinker with operational nous, turning big-picture vision into practical, values-aligned outcomes.
  • Adaptive and entrepreneurial mindset, with a track record of solving complex problems in dynamic environments.

What we offer

  • Full-time, permanent role based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), with flexible working arrangements.
  • Wellbeing allowance, professional development budget, and external supervision or coaching.
  • A collaborative, purpose-driven team culture.
  • Opportunities to shape strategy and grow impact.
  • Occasional evening/weekend work and travel.

Salary

$105,000 – $125,000, depending on the skills, experience, and insights you bring to the role.

Desirable qualifications and experience

A professional background in social work, community development, business leadership, education, advocacy, counselling, or a related field is highly desirable. However, we welcome a range of qualifications and lived experiences that demonstrates your ability to lead boldly and compassionately.

Reports to our Governance Board, which includes both Youth and Executive Advisor trustees.

To apply, send us your CV and a cover letter that tells us:
– Why this role speaks to you
– What you’d bring to our kaupapa
– How your leadership style aligns with our values
