About our team | Mō te tīma

The Board of Trustees are responsible for the governance of stewardship of InsideOUT Kōaro. They oversee our vision and mission, provide strategic leadership to the organisation, support robust financial and risk management, ensure legal and regulatory compliance, and help uphold
our commitment to honouring te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Our Board operates within a ‘for youth, by youth’ framework. This means the majority of our Trustees are Youth Trustees (aged 27 and under) and the remaining Trustees are Executive Advisors (over the age of 27). This is to ensure that we are led by the lived experiences of rainbow and takatāpui taiohi while also ensuring there are the necessary skills and experience on the Board to support good governance.

 

About the role | Te āhua o te tūranga

As a Youth Trustee, you will serve as a Trustee and share in the collective governance responsibilities of the Board. This includes providing the strategic leadership necessary to ensure InsideOUT Kōaro is achieving its vision and mission, providing oversight and monitoring to ensure we are being compliant and meeting our obligations, and maintaining proper financial and risk management.

As a Youth Trustee, you will be supported by the Board and Executive Advisor in your learning and development in the governance space. You will be provide with opportunities to engage in professional development opportunities to build your leadership capabilities.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • set and maintain the vision, mission, and values of the organisation;
  • develop the strategy and annual plan; and
  • identify, manage, and mitigate risks to the organisation.
  • ensure moral and legal compliance and accountability with relevant guidelines, legislation and regulations;
  • establish and monitor relevant policies and procedures;
  • support the recruitment, employment and performance of the Managing Director
  • maintain proper fiscal oversight and monitor the financial outlook of the organisation
  • approve the annual budget and expenditure in line with financial delegations.
  • uphold a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and support the organisation to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • foster the youth-focused kaupapa of InsideOUT Kōaro by prioritising youth voices and decision-making.

 

What you bring | Nōu te rourou

InsideOUT Kōaro is at the beginning of embarking on a transformational journey to better honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi throughout our organisation. We are looking for the right people to join our Board of Trustees and come on this journey with us. This means that a good level of understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Māori, and Te Ao Māori and the ability to put this into practice at the governance level is vital for a successful applicant.

We are also looking for applicants to fill key gaps on our Board. As such, applicants with skills and experience in Māori cultural capability, financial management, and health and safety are preferred but we welcome applicants with a diverse range of skills and experience as well.

The essential skills and experience for this role are:

  • Knowledge of Rainbow and Takatāpui Taiohi: a strong understanding of the experiences of rainbow and takatāpui taiohi in Aotearoa, including the issues they face. Previous experience working with rainbow and takatāpui taiohi or on rainbow and takatāpui issues, or a connection to rainbow and takatāpui communities is ideal.
  • Strategic Thinking: a demonstrable ability to engage in big-picture thinking and long-term planning around achieving our vision, and incorporating that into our strategies and decision-making processes.
  • Leadership: experience in leading work and engaging in difficult decision-making.
  • Communications: excellent verbal and written communication skills, including communicating with others professionally and constructively.
  • Interpersonal: the ability to work positively and collaboratively with other Trustees and staff.
  • Māori Cultural Competency and Responsiveness: a good understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Māori, and Te Ao Māori and the ability to put it into practice.
  • Financial Literacy: the ability to read and engage with financial statements, or willingness to learn.
  • Self Management: good time management skills and the ability to self-motivate.
  • Personal/Professional Development: a desire and willingness to continuously learn and develop.

All InsideOUT Kōaro Trustees are subject to police vetting as part of our Child Protection policy.
