Takatāpui Projects Coordinator
Part-time; fixed-term contractor initially until September 2021, Wellington based
Kia hiwa rā! E kimi ana mātou i tētahi kaimahi hou.
InsideOUT Kōaro is a national youth charity seeking a Takatāpui Projects Coordinator for 250 hours over 11 months (average 5-6hrs per week) to lead a new project. You will need to have flexible availability during school hours (8am-4pm Monday to Friday) for this role. Due to the nature of this role, we are seeking an applicant that identifies as takatāpui, or both Māori and rainbow and who is fluent in te reo Māori (written and verbal). A restricted or full drivers license and own vehicle is strongly desired for this position as the role will require travel to kura in the Greater Wellington region.
This project is made up of several key areas:
- Takatāpui Youth Advisory Group – recruiting, facilitating and supporting an advisory group of takatāpui rangatahi to advise on the project and support its direction from initiation to completion.
- Takatāpui Awareness Campaign – rainbow Māori young people often confront a double challenge of both not feeling ‘Māori enough’ or connected to their culture, and not feeling like they are ‘queer enough’ to fit into rainbow spaces. This can result in them feeling lost, unrepresented and lacking confidence in claiming a term like takatāpui. The takatāpui young people we spoke with told us that hearing other people’s stories helped them overcome this challenge. To combat this challenge, we want to run an awareness campaign with posters in public places and boosted social media content with affirming messages and video stories made for and by Māori rainbow young people. The goal is to reach people who might not already be connected with resources or information so that both the Māori and rainbow aspects of their identities’ are validated.
- Takatāpui Video Resource – we will create a short film telling the history of takatāpui and sharing intergenerational stories and perspectives on this identity. This could be used as a standalone resource, or as part of interactive workshops that InsideOUT will provide for Māori youth and social service organisations as an opportunity for them to better understand and respect takatāpui young people, and for rainbow organisations and school Queer Straight Alliances to better understand and include takatāpui rangatahi. We will be working alongside Dr Elizabeth Kerekere (takatāpui academic and activist) and Tīwhanawhana Trust (a takatāpui-led organisation) to create this.
- Kura Kaupapa pilot – we will work with one or more Māori-medium schools to support them to make their school environment more inclusive of and for takatāpui, including gender diverse students. Alongside the pilot relationship with Kura, we aim to develop resources in te reo Māori (the Māori language) to support Kura Kaupapa across Aotearoa to upskill their staff.
InsideOUT is a growing organisation that works to support youth, whānau, schools, community groups, youth services, government agencies and other relevant organisations to provide safer schools and communities for rainbow young people. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and honouring matauranga Maori and tikanga Māori and are happy to share more about our journey with this. We value whakawhanaungatanga and understand social change takes time, we support kaimahi to work in a way that feels genuine and culturally appropriate to them.
We are looking for someone with superb organisational and communication skills and outstanding knowledge of the challenges faced by sexual, sex, and gender minorities, particularly takatāpui. You will be confident at building relationships and working with external groups, particularly in kaupapa Māori settings. Experience in project coordination, facilitation and previous experience working with young people and kura are strongly desired but not required. You are self-motivated with strong time management skills, and will work to uphold the vision and values of InsideOUT. This includes a strengths based approach to youth work.
More information about the organisation is available on our website: http://www.insideout.org.nz/
This is a contract for 250 hours until the end of September 2021, with the possibility of either the hours or the term increasing, or ongoing employment. If the applicant also had skills in the areas of film or illustration/graphic design the hours could potentially be increased. The successful applicant will be paid above a living wage and an hourly rate will be negotiated depending on experience. We are open to a job share in the right circumstances but a priority is finding someone with fluent te reo Māori for the part of the role working with kura that requires this. Our ideal applicant would be in Wellington but we are also open to applications from anywhere in Aotearoa.
InsideOUT is an inclusive employer and we value diversity. Applications will be considered regardless of ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, sexuality, physical or mental ability. Work hours can be flexible.
